Following the announcement that the Phase III stimulus bill includes $400 million in election assistance to help states prepare for the 2020 election cycle, Issue One Executive Director Meredith McGehee released the following statement:

“Congress has just made a solid downpayment on making the 2020 elections safe, secure, and fair.

“While it falls short of the amount Senator Amy Klobuchar had pushed for, it will help states get started as soon as possible on ensuring every eligible American is able to participate in the November elections through early voting and vote-by-mail.

“We hope this initial investment in our democratic system will spark a more robust conversation between secretaries of state and Congress about the need for more resources in future stimulus bills. It is absolutely critical that Congress do everything it can to ensure Americans’ voices are heard in November.

“Issue One will continue to fight to get states the resources they need to prepare for the 2020 elections.”
