In response to today’s vote in the House passing H.R. 4, the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, Issue One’s Founder and CEO Nick Penniman released the following statement:

“The House of Representatives acted today to honor the legacy of John Lewis and protect the sacred freedom to vote. By passing the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, we are one step closer to building an inclusive democracy that works for everyone.

“This important piece of legislation restores a critical section of the Voting Rights Act, which has long been supported by an overwhelming majority of Republicans and Democrats. When it was last reauthorized in 2006, it sailed through Congress with near universal support and was signed into law by President George W. Bush. It is now the Senate’s responsibility to guarantee equal access to the ballot box and pass this bill, just as they have done in the past.

“Partisan politics must not get in the way of ensuring that every American has a voice in our democratic process.”

Prior to the vote, Issue One sent a letter to all House members urging them to support the legislation.
