Issue One issued the following statement in response to Senator Joe Manchin’s (D-WV) call for bipartisan democracy reform and the passage of SB 202 in the Georgia House of Representatives:

“We are encouraged by Senator Joe Manchin’s desire to work with members from both parties to strengthen our democracy and protect Americans’ right to vote. This is an historic opportunity for Congress to come together in a bipartisan manner to fix our broken political system.

“The urgency of this moment cannot be overstated. Already this year, more than 250 bills in 43 states have been introduced that would make it harder to vote. Today, the Georgia House of Representatives passed legislation that would roll back voting progress in the state.

“These assaults on Americans’ ability to vote must be defeated. While no election is perfect, the 2020 election was the most secure in our nation’s history. Rather than making it harder to vote, our elected leaders from both sides of the aisle must come together to increase participation and strengthen our elections.”
