Issue One welcomes former North Dakota Republican Governor and Secretary of Agriculture Ed Schafer to our ReFormers Caucus. Secretary Schafer joins a distinguished group of more than 170 former lawmakers in the fight to fix our broken political system.
Sec. Schafer served as governor of North Dakota for eight years (1992 to 2000), using his experience in business to diversify the state’s economy. Sec. Schafer’s tenure was also notable for his dedication to facilitate internet access across North Dakota. While governor, Sec. Schafer served as chairman of both the Western Governors Association (1995) and the Republican Governors Association (2000), even co-founding and co-chairing the Governors’ Biotechnology Partnership to “increase public understanding and support for the benefits of agricultural biotechnology.”
In 2008 President George W. Bush nominated him for Secretary of Agriculture and the nomination passed with a unanimous vote in the Senate.
Currently, Sec. Schafer serves as chair of the Theodore Roosevelt Medora Foundation which oversees tourism and entertainment in the Badlands and supports citizens advocacy groups in North Dakota. It was originally founded by his father, Harold Schafer.
We are excited to have Sec. Schafer’s decades of experience and bipartisan leadership on board.
